It's been a while since I've posted anything. It's also been a while since I've done anything "domestic." Bummer. But I'm back at it! I made this cake for a work Halloween party. It's a chocolate cake with a chocolate mouse filling. Delightful! I the skulls and spiders are plastic, I just bought them at Zurchers. And... the "dirt" on the outside is the extra cake you take off to make it flat.

I was proud of it, although it didn't win any awards. Happy Halloween! Muhoowahaahaaa . . .

Mom's Birthday Cake

Aha! This is my second cake I have ever made and I'm really quite proud of it. It's for my mom. For her birthday. The white roses in the middle are the second and third that I've made. I'll get better at them, but they look alright. And one of the things that I'm most proud of is that I was asked if it was made of fondant. That's right! It was so smooth it looked like fondant. It's not! It's buttercream. What is my secret? Well, it's all in keeping the spatula warm so that it doesn't stick to the frosting, but ends up kind of melting the frosting to make it look so smooth. The inside is a lemon cake with a raspberry filling. I can't wait to eat it.

Strawberry grooms

Okay, these will get better looking with practice and when I can find where they hide the toothpicks at Walmart. But aren't they just adorable! Little strawberry grooms. I made them last night. And, of course, this morning as I was getting ready for the day it hit my brain how I can make little strawberry brides to go with the grooms. So that will probably be a post in the not too distant future. But for now, here are the grooms. I think they look handsome.

Boston Cream Cupcakes

So far, I think that these are the most delicious cupcakes I have either tasted or made. They may not have any flowers or frills, but these are some serious cupcakes. They have a pudding-ish filling and a semi-sweet chocolate covering that both keep the cupcake from being too sweet or too dry. They are delicious with an unrefined look. I started making these when I thought to myself, "Self, I want to decorate cakes but it looks super hard to do. I'll start with layered cupcakes and work my way up to layered cakes." Anyway, I took a bunch to work today and they disappeared.

First cake ever . . .

This beautiful cake you see is the first cake I have ever decorated. The hearts turned out a little lumpy and I need to get better at covering up the piping gel, but you have to admit, for a first ever cake decoration, it's not too shabby. The inside of the cake was a two-layer devil's food cake with an oreo filling. The chunks of oreos were probably my favorite part. I've decided the taste of the frosting is way too sweet so my next project is to find a less sweet frosting that still works for decorating beautiful cakes.

I'm doing it! I'm starting a blog!!

Welp, it's probably time I conformed to society and started a blog. I promised myself I wouldn't start a blog unless I had a clever name (which may change as I don't find it extremely clever) and if I had something to blog about. Well, now I do. I've decided to become more domesticated. I recently cut my husband's hair (he's so brave) for the first time, and it turned out okay! My biggest thing right now is my cake decorating class. So that kind of stuff is what my blog will be about. There will probably be a lot of pictures of ugly cakes, with a few cute ones. So here goes!
